1. The real level of Form 1: thinking transformation
Every year after September, we receive the same type of inquiry: "I have always scored 80 or 90 points in primary school mathematics, but suddenly I only got 50 or 60 points in the first test of Form 1." Parents usually think that it is not working hard enough or not adapting to the new school, but the real reason is often The nature of mathematics has changed in Form 1.

Changes in learning patterns are equally important. In middle schools, the explanation time for each topic is shorter and the opportunities for repeated practice are reduced. Therefore, after-class review and active questioning become necessary conditions rather than bonus points. Students usually know the saying "a negative sign makes a positive", but they don't understand why it is true, so they cannot deduce it in compound situations (there are negative signs before parentheses, and multiple negative signs appear in succession). This is a matter of concept rather than carelessness.
Treatment method- use number line Establish an intuitive understanding of direction—subtracting a negative number equals moving in a positive direction.
- When there is a negative sign before the bracket, first draw a mark above the bracket, then expand it Check item by item.

Difficulty 2: Algebraic symbols and the meaning of the equal sign

If students still read the equal sign as "the calculation result is", shifting the term becomes an unreasonable rule; once they understand that the equal sign means that both sides are equal, shifting the term and changing the sign is a natural result - the same quantity is added or subtracted on both sides at the same time, and the equation still holds.
Treatment method- use Libra The metaphor establishes the concept of balance: when both sides do the same thing at the same time, the scales remain balanced.
- In the early stage, students are required to write the sentence "subtract 3 from both sides at the same time" instead of jumping directly to the result of the transfer. Simplify writing only after your understanding is solid.
- Use the substitution method to check the calculation: Substitute the obtained value back into the original equation and confirm that both sides are equal. This also trains calculation habits.
Difficulty 3: Translate word problems into equations
Typical errorsAfter reading the word problems, I don’t know where to start, or I just try to use arithmetic calculations without unknowns.
I set up an unknown number but didn’t write clearly what it represents, which led to all the mistakes later.
Mispronunciation of the relationship between the questions, such as confusing "5 more" with "5 times more".
This ability is used throughout secondary school mathematics, until the application questions in DSE and the situational questions in M1 are testing the same thing. And Form 1 is it first appearance time - establishing the correct method at this time is the lowest cost.
Treatment method (four-step fixed process)- explicit settings: Write "Let x be...", including the units. This sentence also scores points in the public examination.

4. Scope of Form 1 Course Coverage
The secondary school mathematics curriculum in Hong Kong is organized into three learning areas:Numbers and Algebra, Measurement, Figures and Space and Data processing. The content of Form 1 falls into these three categories.

The order and depth of topics vary greatly from school to school. Some Band 1 secondary schools introduce deeper content (such as simple identities or preliminary factoring) in Form 1 in advance, while some schools defer certain topics to Form 2. Unit Conversion: An Easily Underestimated Difficulty

I was pretty good at primary school maths, but why am I suddenly struggling with Form 1?

Do I need to prepare in advance for the summer vacation in Primary 6?
