1. Unit structure and elective combination rules
Edexcel International Advanced Level (IAL) Mathematics Admission unit system— This is the most fundamental difference between it and DSE and IB. Complete IAL by six units The exam can be taken in stages.

There are clear restrictions on elective combinations - not just any two subjects can be matched. According to Pearson's qualification instructions, the two elective units for the full IAL Mathematics must be one of the following combinations:
- M1 and S1
- M1 and D1
- M1 and M2
- S1 and D1
- S1 and S2
In other words:M2 must practice together with M1, S2 must be the same practitioner as S1, while D1 (Decision Mathematics 1) can be paired with M1 or S1. If you see combination suggestions such as "S1 plus M2" online, that is not an allowed combination. The actual range of options also depends on which units are offered by the school.

2. The most important analysis: complex numbers and matrices are not in P1 to P4
This is the most common range of temperature errors in IAL mathematics. According to Pearson specification document,Complex Numbers and Matrix Algebra belong to Further Pure Mathematics 1 (FP1),and Not here Pure Mathematics P1 to P4.
The units in FP1 are described as: Complex numbers, roots of quadratic equations, numerical solution of equations, coordinate systems, matrix algebra, transformations using matrices, series, proofs.
So if you are studying International A Level in Mathematics (P1 to P4 plus two elective units) whereas No Taking Further Mathematics, complex numbers and matrices are not within the scope of your exam. Spending time reviewing them is a pure loss.
Three relevant qualifications should be distinguished

The three are different qualifications, each with independent qualification codes and level boundaries. Before applying, you must confirm which one the school has registered you for - this determines the scope of your actual exam.
Another common confusion: IAL's M1 has absolutely nothing to do with DSE's M1. IAL's M1 is Mechanics 1 (Mechanics), the content is kinematics, force and Newton's laws, etc.; M1 of DSE is the mathematics Extended Modules unit one "Calculus and Statistics". There is no overlap between the two scopes. Similarly, S1 of IAL is Statistics 1 and has no correspondence with DSE Extended Modules. 3. Four units of Pure Mathematics
P1 to P4 are the compulsory core of the full IAL and make up four of the six units. The following are the main content areas of each unit.
P1: Pure Mathematics 1
Main categoriesIntroduction to algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, differential calculus, and integral calculus.
focusP1 is the foundation of the entire Pure line. Fluency in algebraic operations is established here - if this step is not stable, the next three units will be affected.
P2: Pure Mathematics 2
Main categoriesFurther applications of algebra and extension of functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, exponents and logarithms, trigonometry, differential and integral calculus.
focusTrigonometry and exponential logarithms are formally developed here and are a prerequisite for P3 Advanced Calculus.
P3: Pure Mathematics 3
Main categoriesAlgebra and functions, advanced content of trigonometry, exponential and logarithmic functions, differential techniques (including chain rule, product rule, quotient rule), integration techniques, and numerical solutions to equations.

P4: Pure Mathematics 4
Main categoriesAccording to Pearson specifications, the units of P4 are described as: proof, algebra and functions, plane coordinate geometry, binomial expansion, differential calculus, integral,vector.
focusVector is the iconic content of P4, and it is also the part that is most likely to lose points - because it requires the ability to set spatial relationships rather than simple calculations.Note that P4 does not contain plurals (See Previous section).
The above is an overview of the main areas of each unit.Specific details and remarks should be subject to Pearson's current specification documents.— The specifications will be revised from time to time, and the depth requirements of the details (such as whether a certain skill needs to be proved) often determine the actual focus of review. Details of unit content should be checked against Pearson's current specifications. The division of content between statistics and mechanics units has been adjusted (for example, whether certain distributions or techniques belong to S1 or S2), and old materials circulating on the Internet may not be updated. If your school has designated a unit, the most reliable way is to directly obtain the specifications and previous test papers of the unit code (such as WST01, WME01).
Practical considerations for elective combinations
- First look at which units the school offers. Then consider personal preference - for units that are not offered by the school, personal preference is meaningless.
- Confirm whether the combination is one of the five allowed. M2 must be equipped with M1, S2 must be equipped with S1; D1 can be equipped with M1 or S1.
- Check with the requirements of the target department. Some engineering or physics courses prefer mechanics units; some business courses prefer statistics units. Requirements vary by university and department. Please check the requirements published by the target department in that year.
- Consider synergy with other subjects. If you take IAL Physics at the same time, there is considerable overlap in the content of the Mechanics line, which can save review time.
5. UMS Scoring and Goal Setting
UMS (Uniform Mark Scale) is the most practical part of the IAL system - it turns the target score into a calculable number.
The key differences between UMS and original scores
The raw score grade boundaries will change each exam season. (Reflecting the difficulty of the test paper); but UMS boundaries are fixed, the same every exam season.
For the Mathematics unit: raw marks out of 75 converted to 100 UMS; A level is 80 UMS (i.e. 80%), and each subsequent level differs from 10 UMS percentage points, up to Class E is 40 UMS.
So if you want to know how close you are to your goal, you should look at the UMS rather than the raw score—the meaning of which fluctuates depending on the difficulty of the paper.

Regarding the conditions for awarding A*: A* for the full IAL requires an overall UMS score of A level (480/600), with additional requirements for performance in the A2 stage units. Please check Pearson's published qualifications directly for specific thresholds - we won't list unconfirmed numbers here as it will directly impact your goal setting.

The strategic implication of the unit system: UMS can "store". If a unit is scored particularly well (e.g. 92 UMS), it provides a buffer for the overall score, allowing greater room for error in subsequent units. On the other hand, if a unit only gets 60 UMS, subsequent units will have to be significantly above average to catch up.
This is completely different from DSE’s one-off assessment – IAL allows you Allocate risk with strategies: Test your strongest units first to build a buffer, and then deal with weaker units.
6. Exam season and re-examination mechanism
Pearson is designed for International A Level three exam seasons: In January, June and October, the original grading boundaries are announced each quarter.

Registration arrangements must be confirmed with the school or a Pearson authorized test centre. The unit supply, registration deadlines and fees for each examination season vary from centre to centre; the application pathways for local self-study students are also different from those for on-campus students. This information will change on an annual basis and specific dates are not listed on this page - please check directly with your school or examination centre for arrangements for that year.
The strategic value of retaking the exam
The unit-based re-examination mechanism is the core advantage of IAL over DSE:
- Just resit individual units, there is no need to retake the whole subject.
- Achievements can be created in stages, reduce one-time risks.
- Can be remedied before applying to college— If a unit drags down the total score, the October quarter provides an additional opportunity.
But retaking the exam comes with costs: time, expense, and distraction. In practice, it is recommended that re-examination be regarded as insurance not plan- Prepare by doing well the first time rather than relying on retakes.
7. The actual difference between IAL and DSE
"It's both difficult" is not a good question, because the sources of difficulty are different. A more useful way to ask is:Which system suits your learning style?.

Practical Selection Considerations
- If you need specific target numbers: IAL’s UMS regime provides this. There are no official cutoffs for DSE and targets can only be set using behavioral indicators (see 5** Strategy).
- If your performance is easily affected by a single test status: IAL’s phasing and re-examination mechanism reduces risk concentration.
- If your English reading speed is slow: IAL full volume in English, this is the actual time cost. DSE optional Chinese volume.
- If you are mainly applying to local universities: DSE is more direct through the joint admissions process; IAL requires non-joint admissions admissions, and the admission arrangements for some courses are different.

8. Exam preparation strategies
time allocation
Each maths unit is 75 minutes, 90 minutes, that is, the average per minute is approximately 1.2 minutes. suggestion:
- Allocate time by score, not evenly by question number.
- Set aside about 8 to 10 minutes for checking—especially the symbols for vector and calculus questions.
- During daily practice, fix the rules for discarding questions: If a single question exceeds "score × 1.5 minutes" and there is no entry point, mark it as skip, but write down the setting or formula first.
Show That type of questions
IAL common Show that… or Prove that… question types, they require The complete derivation process— The answer has been given to you, and the points are all in the process. Therefore skipping a step equals direct loss of points.
Processing principles: Start from the given side of the question and gradually push to the other side. You must be able to see what is used at each step; do not operate both sides at the same time. This is consistent with the requirements of the proof questions in DSE Paper 1, see Paper 1 Answering Tips.
Formula tables and memorized division of labor
The IAL exam provides formula tables, but this does not mean that you do not need to memorize them. In practice, it is divided into three categories:
- Must memorize: Very frequently used (such as basic derivation and integration results) - the time cost of turning over tables is higher than memorizing them.
- know which page on the table: Occasionally used but with a longer formula.
- Just understand: Can be deduced from other results.

Use of previous exam questions
- Pearson provides previous test papers and scoring reference (Mark Scheme) for each unit.Search by unit code (For example, WMA11 to WMA14 correspond to P1 to P4) instead of using the old C1 to C4.

- When correcting, refer to the Mark Scheme step by step to check "whether I have written this step" instead of just correcting the answer.
Suggested timeline for the two-year programme
- first year: Complete P1, P2 and the first elective unit (IAS stage) and take the exam in June quarter.
- first year summer vacation: Preview calculus skills for P3 - the most skill-demanding section of the Pure line.
- First semester of second year: Complete P3, P4 and the second elective unit; depending on the progress, you can take some units in January quarter.
- Second semester of second year: Targeted training, complete the remaining units in June quarter.
- If necessary: The re-examination in October quarter drags down the total score of the unit.
9. Course Arrangements and Fees
The unit combinations for IAL students vary greatly - the same 'IAL Mathematics' class may have someone in P2, someone in P4, someone in S1 and someone in M1. Therefore, our approach is to first confirm your Qualification code and unit combination, and then decide on teaching arrangements.

IAL Mathematics FAQ
What units does IAL Mathematics consist of?
Full IAL six units: compulsory P1 to P4, plus two elective units (combination must be M1+S1, M1+D1, M1+M2, S1+D1 or S1+S2). IAS adds an elective unit to P1 and P2. Each unit has a raw score of 75 points and an exam of 1 hour and 30 minutes.
In which unit are complex numbers and matrices located?
exist Further Pure Mathematics 1 (FP1), not within P1 to P4. If you are studying International A Level in Mathematics rather than Further Mathematics, complex numbers and matrices are not within the scope of your exam.
What is UMS?
Unified fractional scale. A raw score of 75 converts to 100 UMS per maths unit. The original dividing line changes quarterly, but UMS boundaries fixed: A is 80%, with a difference of 10 percentage points per level, and E is 40%.
How is the overall grade calculated?
Press total UMS score only. IAS is worth 300 UMS (240 A, B 210, C 180, D 150, E 120); full IAL is 600 UMS (A is 480, B 420, C 360, D 300, E 240). A* also has conditions for performance in unit A2. Please check Pearson’s published information for specific thresholds.
How many exams are there every year?
Three seasons: January, June, October. Individual modules can be taken and re-sited in stages. Please check with the school or Pearson authorized test centre for specific registration arrangements.
Should I choose Statistics or Mechanics?
First confirm which units the school offers and whether the combination is one of the five allowed (M2 must be paired with M1, S2 must be paired with S1). For engineering physics, choose the Mechanics track, and for business and economics, choose the Statistics track, and check the requirements of the target departments.
Do C1 to C4 still exist?
Doesn't exist, it's an old serial number. The current core pure mathematics units are P1 to P4 (unit codes WMA11 to WMA14). Search past test questions and apply the current code.
Is IAL's M1 the same as DSE's M1?
no. M1 of IAL is Mechanics 1 (mechanics); M1 of DSE is "Calculus and Statistics". There is no overlap between the two scopes.
Can IAL be self-study?
Yes, Pearson provides complete specifications and past test questions. But there are two things that are more difficult to handle on your own: confirming unit combination compliance and qualification registration, and correcting your own derivation process according to the Mark Scheme. Registration arrangements must be made with a Pearson authorized test centre.
Can I apply to local universities in Hong Kong with IAL scores?
Yes, but only through non-joint recruitment channels. The admission requirements and arrangements of each university and department are different and will be adjusted annually. You should directly check the requirements announced by the target department for that year.
