3. What’s really difficult about M1?
The most common mistake in M1 is not misremembering the formulas, but using them incorrectly. Students can usually do calculations but cannot tell which model the situation in front of them belongs to.
Difficulty 1: Probability distribution selection

The distribution was chosen incorrectly, the Poisson mean rate was not adjusted in proportion to time, and the supplementary events were not used when seeking "at least once". These errors can result in the entire problem being calculated correctly but still completely lost.
Difficulty 2: Interpretation of normal distribution
Correct process- First draw a bell curve and mark the mean, desired position and shaded area.
- Normalize raw values to Z-scores.
- Make sure you are looking for the left tail, right tail or middle area before looking up a table or using a computer.
- Write the probability results back to the problem situation.
The left tail is confused with the right tail, the standard deviation is confused with the variance, and the direction of the table lookup is wrong when calculating the value from probability in the reverse question.
Difficulty 3: Calculus application questions

M1 is 100 minutes and 150 minutes, which is about 1.5 minutes per minute. Part A and Part B are each 50 points each, but Part B has fewer questions and the questions lead to each other, so more time should be reserved.
